THE BIG POND TIMES _____________________________________________________________________________ _...and the ECMA for Best New Artist goes to ...Gordie Sampson_. Signature glasses perched on his head, shorter hair style, and retro-garb, Gordie_s acceptance was brief, poised and, not surprisingly, included his family ~ Frank, Flo and Amy were all there. Nominated for two awards would have been nice enough but to take one home-wow! The parentals tell us as well that he has jacket credits with seven other ECMA 1999 award winners. And he is just a baby, eh Flo? Congratulations Gordie. He was in contention for an award the day his new CD was released. Don_t suppose anyone noticed how many awards came back over to Cape Breton, and stayed here?. Can_t wait for next year.COMMUNITY COUNCIL NOTES - The February 3 meeting of Council was chaired by Treasurer Kenny MacLellan in Donnie MacNeil_s absence. In addition to the Executive, only 9 members participated. Attendance has been declining over the last few months. Is it just winter blahs or is there more to it? Council was advised that the CBRM had refused our application for support of the Winter Carnival. Past contributions from the CBRM, though small, have been sorely needed and much appreciated. Concern was also express- ed that CBRM will not be supporting the summer swim program this year. What_s happening? We seem to get less and less in return for our increasing property tax dollars. Council voted to provide up to $150.00 to the carnival for hotdogs, hot-chocolate and other supplies mostly for the kids. Pat Nelder has been invited to sit on a recreational needs assessment committee for the CBRM. The process will be managed by St. F.X. Big Pond and area concerns will be brought to the committee. Melvin White reported that the Concert Committee has begun planning for the 1999 concert. Pat Tobin will join Sue Currie on the East Bay School Advisory Committee.
The next council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 3 at 7:30pm FILING CABINET - removed from the Consolidated School - please return. It belongs to Community Council.BOOKMOBILE - The bookmobile will be in Big Pond at MacLeod_s store Tuesday, April 13 at 11:15am, Irish Vale at 1:30pm and Irish Cove at 2:00pm
MIXED DARTS LEAGUE - There are ten teams in the league this season. After twenty weeks of play, the team of Arabelle Fougere, Lloyd White, and Kevin MacPhee, Jr. are in first place with 119 points. Close behind in second place is the team of Dave MacKillop, the senior Kevin MacPhee and Pat Joe with 114 points. Tied for third place are the teams of Michelle MacLeod, Arlie Myatt and Colin Cabot along with Fred Edwards, Gordie MacDonald and Adam MacPhee with 110 points each. Women_s High Score belongs to Helen Blois (180); men_s is Richard Cabot (160); Men_s High Start is Colin Cabot (160); women_s is Arabelle Fougere (156); Men_s High Finish is Kevin MacPhee, Sr. (108) and Women_s High Finish is Michelle MacLeod (108). League president this year is Melvin White, Flo MacPhee is Treasurer and Jean Roche is statistician. Darts is the attraction at the Big Pond Fire Hall every Friday night beginning at 8 o_clock. Spares are always welcome. The cost to play is $2.00. Even- split tickets are sold nightly. (Jean Roche) RECIPES - The February edition of the TIMES carried a piece inviting submissions to the _Keep Cape Breton Really Clean (road kill) Cookbook_. Can you believe that we actually received _contributions_? (Clue~you will have to guess who issued the invitation and contributed from the list of credits at the end of this edition)
VENISON AT ITS BEST
Tune in next month for more, such as _Mountain Ash Jelly For Game_. Be assured that the subscription rate for the TIMES will not be raised in anticipation of the flood of interest. Incidently, can anyone fill us in on the world_s only recorded catch of an _aquatic cat_ through the ice in Big Pond years ago? WINTER CARNIVAL. How do you have a winter carnival without winter? That was Big Pond_s challenge this year. Cancellations were the rule as temperatures soared and ice and snow melted. A tarp made the kid_s hay-ride possible. Twenty or so youngsters had a great time on the wagon behind Lloyd White_s trusty machine. Only the snow making facilities of the Ben Eoin Ski hill saved the Thursday outing. Conditions were great according to Blair MacDonald who skied with abandon despite not feeling well. Bev MacPherson used the occasion to sell eggs while Melvin White_s back sent him messages he didn_t want to hear. Thanks are in order to the Ben Eoin Ski Club for their generous rental and lift coupon for the Carnival ski evening. Indoor events stayed on schedule, highlighted by the Senior_s cards, Tarbish night and the annual _Fire persons_ Fashion Show and Karaoke finale Friday night. Not many of the models (except perhaps Rhonda McCarron) will appear in Victoria_s Secret Catalogue. The models showed more than their generosity again this year. Despite his new svelte appearance, Art Lewis still cuts an imposing figure in black; _Nipper_ stood out and _Monica_ Donovan blew us away with her humility. All were great. Anne Thomas and Ann Macintyre are to be admired for their dedication in recruiting models and coordinating the _talent_. Thanks also to the coordinating committee, all the volunteers and contributors. COMMUNITY NOTES - Margie MacLellan had a stay in hospital, Alf advises that she is on the mend ~ Marg Melanson is also improving. We hope she will be recuperating back in Sydney soon ~ Jeannie Murray also had surgery recently ~ Joe and AnnMarie Donovan are grandparents for the second time; Daughter Kim is mother to _Mary Sarah_ a healthy daughter ~ Mary MacPherson will be spending more time in Halifax when Bernadette (George and son Yuri Salmaniw) takes up new duties with the Royal Bank as Manager Personal Banking at their Bedford branch. Good luck and a special thanks from TIMES staff and readers ~ Ed and Anne MacIntyre have spent a lot of time _in travel status_ this winter. After a November stint in St.Petersburg, Florida visiting Ed_s sister Claire they_ve already done a 1999 visit to Ed_s brothers Jim in Windsor and Stan in Hamilton as well as a Fredericton visit to help celebrate Anne_s friend Dorita_s (Jim) 50th birthday ~ Lindsay MacPhee enjoyed the UCCB break with brother Callum in Windsor. She also spend party time with aunt Trese and husband Jimmie, Brenda and Gerald Carmichael (formerly of Ben Eoin), Darryl Jones and fiance Vanessa, Lisa Mac Neil and Russell Devoe ~ Can you believe it, Gordie and Bonnie MacDonald left Tues. Feb. 23 for Florida_s Disneyland with grand daughter Shannie, returned to Big Pond to pick up their car and are probably now driving back to Florida ~ Marie MacPhee is still dieting and walking her way into bikini condition and Malcie quit smoking (again) in preparation for their upcoming Caribbean cruise with Dino and Blanche Sophocleous ~ Not to be outdone, Fr. Bedford journeyed to Ontario and Alberta. Despite some bruises, his first homily upon return was on the _joy of skiing_ ~ Laura Lee MacPhee was at the ECMA party-time in St. John_s ~ Tom O_Keefe was there too, drumming up business for his new recording studio in Irish Cove ~ Keith and Pat Nelder participated in the annual Boat Show in Halifax ~ The FOR SALE sign that graced Carol and Dennis MacDonald_s property ever so briefly was the work of mischievous skulduggery by, who else but, John _Rare Bird_ MacInnis and Simon _Hammer_ Murray. Big Pond border guards must be more vigilant in the future. ~ Alf MacLellan spent a few minutes one Sunday carefully counting the rings on some of the timber being cut from Parish land and stacked behind the Church. He recalled, with Melvin White, the stand as new growth some 50 years ago. Now, in its maturity, it is being harvested to allow a new cycle to begin ~ What is the definition of _sheer terror_? It_s the look in Tom MacPherson_s eyes as he slides out of control down the ski slope with a small piece of styrofoam clutched in his hands! TIMES NIGHT OUT- An appreciation night for Big Pond TIMES volunteers and regular contributors was hosted by Don MacGillivary and Sharise MacKeigan at the big house on the corner, Sat., February 6. In contention for the best jambalaya between East Bay and St. Peters, Sharise showed no quarter in spicing up her specialty: Jack MacNeil broke out in a sweat while John Willie MacInnis forgot about the pain in his back and, as Tom MacPherson noted, Keith Nelder was briefly granted the gift of speech. Copies of TIMES highlights graced the kitchen walls and conversation was not limited to the light stuff. A great time was had by all. INVITATION - Come celebrate 25 years of marriage with Donnie and Sarah MacPhee on the 27th day of March, 9:00pm at the Northside East Bay Fire Hall (Blair MacPhee) A.D.MORRISON_S STORE III .---I once-asked Joe Neil MacNeil if he had ever heard a name for the hill where the Loch Lomond Road leaves Route 4. He searched his memory for a little while, and then replied in that surprised tone we sometimes use when we remember something long forgotten, _Yes, Ingraham_s Hill!_. In Loch Lomond I came across that name for the second time. In a little work written by the late Catherine Morrison we read _ |
