THE BIG POND TIMES

JUNE 1999 VOLUME VI NUMBER 6

THE RANKINS ARE COMING TO BIG POND!

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

At the March council meeting Councilor Ivan Doncaster announced that CBRM has approved financial support for the summer swim program. A mild debate took place among members, with Ivan regarding support from CBRM for community efforts relative to the local ‘investment’ through taxes. (It might be interesting to make that comparison based on pre- and post-CBRM.) Doncaster noted that decisions on the wharf improvement proposal will not be made until the end of June.

Melvin White announced the Rankins will head the Big Pond Festival. Two summer jobs have been received under the Nova Scotia Employment Program for Students Summer 1999. Big Pond has been selected again as a venue for the Celtic Colors. Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Sharise MacKeigan advised that the area grad season will be between June 23-28 this year. Volunteers to do sentinel duties over that period are needed. Correspondence regarding the community welcome signs and an invitation to become involved in the provincial ‘Adopt a Highway’ program was passed on to the Garden Club. Residents expressed dismay that the heavy garbage pickup has been discontinued. Joe Donovan commented on the mess that the highway construction was leaving in its wake. Ivan offered to follow up and within forty-eight hours a substantial improvement was noted. The next meeting of the Big Pond Community Council is Wednesday, 2 June, 7:30 PM at the Fire Hall.

COMMUNITY CULTURAL CENTER

Last month’s edition of the Times carried a piece on efforts within the Big Pond community to replace the old fire hall. The concept has further evolved to focus on meeting the need for a community center within which the fire service would be housed. The central item on the agenda for the next meeting of council will be a presentation of the model and solicitation of further community input into the project planning. This is a major undertaking so come and participate.

CRUISING THE BRAS D’OR

"Y’KNOT". Cruise the Bras d’Or, have a swim party at the MacPhee Islands, enjoy a romantic evening in the moonlight, make some music, have a wedding even—"Y’Knot?", offers Captain Joe Donovan. "The options are as broad as your imagination—barbecue, clams, mussels, square dance, bird tours...you name it and you got it." After two seasons devoted to pinpointing every possible sandbar to run aground on and most ways of slipping her mooring, Joe and his faithful crew have fine-tuned their navigation and mechanical skills and are ready for some serious cruising.

The former lobster boat will be in the water by early June, promises Joe. He already has some bookings—referrals from the Big Pond Bed and Breakfast—from Orlando, Florida and Timmons, Ontario.

Joe has made many improvements to the "Y’Knot". She was built in PEI coming to Big Pond via Arichat and she’s here to stay. Although forty feet in length she draws just under three feet. Powered by a 282 Stenpro engine she generates 165 horsepower. Cruises can accommodate 30 passengers, so if your summer plans lean towards the lake call Joe at 828-2076.

YOUTH NOTES

With this issue we welcome Theresa MacMillan to our editorial staff. Theresa will report regularly on the younger crowd and she can be contacted at 828-2846.

There are a few young people in this community that deserve congratulations! John Michael Curry and Nicole Pronk made their First Communion in April. Also, Megan and Nicole MacLeod and Natalie MacMillan will soon make their First Confession. Alicia Tobin and Helen MacMillan had their artwork displayed in the Art Gallery at UCCB. We have some very smart people in Big Pond. John, Joe, and Jamie McDonald received silver on the Honor Roll. Christine McDonald and Angela MacPherson received Honors with Distinction. Krista Ross and David McCarron received Honors. As of June 11th Christine McDonald will be out on the road; she turns 16. The Big Pond Fire Department would also like to thank Josh McDonald for donating his fire truck as a decoration at their banquet.

Regional Council Notes – District 14, May 16, 1999.Congratulations to the newly elected officers of the Big Pond Volunteer

Fire Department. Through the efforts of ECBC and the initiative of Councillor Danny Hansen a Rural—Coastal Development Committee was established. The committee is comprised of thirteen councillors from Rural—Coastal

areas and it has a threefold mandate as follows: 1. Improve existing social and physical community assets; 2. Develop sustainable economic activities in the tourism and recreation sector within rural and coastal communities; 3. Provide working opportunities to residents within CBRM.

We are looking at various projects within District 14: sprucing up community halls, improvement to recreation facilities, community signage, docking facilities and hiking and walking trails. Presently

these projects are being reviewed by local government agencies. The total cost of projects from within the CBRM is approximately 1.7 million, with

work for 130 individuals for a twelve week period. We are looking for funding from the Provincial and Federal governments to do all or some of these projects, with ECBC selecting the projects and the workforce.

Curbside Recycling Program has begun in our District. "Blue Bags" will be collected every second Saturday, beginning on 22 May.

Presently the Municipality is interviewing core students for the various

positions within the area. There will be a

job lottery set up for sometime the end of May for students in District 14. Watch in the CB Post for a further update or call Ivan at 828-2272.

In conjunction with the Trans Canada Trail, the Cape Breton County Trails Assoc. are looking at constructing trails from outside Sydney to Saint Peters. The Cape Breton Trails Assoc. meets the 1st Wednesday of

each month at the Ossie Fraser Hall in Westmount. For more information

call Art at 564-9378, or Heather at CBRM Recreation - 563-5512. Have a safe and happy summer! Respectfully submitted, Ivan Doncaster, Councillor, District14
